When control is masquerading as responsibility…
Control doesn’t always look like control.
It can sound like reason, responsibility, planning, productivity, or simply “being sensible.”
In this transmission, I explore a distinction that has become increasingly clear to me: the difference between taking responsibility for our lives and trying to control the process of how life unfolds.
I share what I’ve been noticing in myself — the part that wants to know where things are going, have a plan, make sure I’m doing the right thing, and create certainty around something that is inherently uncertain.
And underneath that need for control, I find something much more tender: the discomfort of not knowing.
The desire to feel safe by taking over the process rather than opening ourselves to what might emerge.
The practice I explore is not about getting rid of control or becoming someone who never feels the need to control.
It is much simpler:
To notice the agent of control.
To become aware of the moments when we feel the urge to push, force, hurry, fix or make something happen — and to see if we can witness that mechanism without immediately identifying with it.
Because maybe freedom isn’t the absence of the voice that wants control.
Maybe it is the space that opens when we can hear the voice without automatically obeying it.
~Reflection
❍ Where in your life are you currently feeling that youneed to make something happen?
❍What are you afraid might happen if you stopped pushing, planning or trying to control the outcome?
❍ And can you simply notice the answer — without trying to change it?
~Put into practise
For the next few days, notice moments of urgency, pushing or forcing.
When you catch yourself, pause and simply ask:
“Is this responsibility — or is this control?”
You don’t need to do anything with the answer.
Just notice.
With love
